ART AND CULTURE
We are in the heart of Rome, in his first quarter that is “Monti” (mounts), so called because once comprised the Esquilino, Viminal, part of the Quirinal and the Celio hills.
It is the most ancient quarter of Rome and for that reason the site offers a quite complete overview of the city’s history, from the Republican to the Imperial period, and the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and Baroque, a series of styles covering 2500 years with monuments and vestiges from antiquity.
The Sibille’s house is at ten minute walk from the Colosseum and the archaeological area of the Fori Imperiali and from Colle Oppio where is located the Domus Aurea. The picturesque ancient Roman “Subura” now Suburra (the word means " inhabited area under the city"), giving this exact impression while going downstairs to Piazza della Suburra from Via Cavour or going upstairs the “Salita de’ Borgia” to reach the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, home of Michelangelo's superb statue of Moses or even walking down along Via dei Serpenti to reach Madonna dei Monti.
In the nearby Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, inside the Park, the remains of an old Villa reveal a Magic or Alchemist Door, a portal into the secretive world of 1600s alchemy and while this "magic door" is famous to Romans, it is barely noticed by tourists visiting Rome.
Other places of interests easily reachable are Porta Maggiore; the “Orti del Mecenate”, beautiful gardens that was containing a high tower from which it is said that Nero watched The Great Fire of Rome; Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the largest interdisciplinary exhibition space in central Via Nazionale; Palazzo Brancaccio where is hosted the National Museum of Oriental Art; the “Campidoglio”; the Basilica of San Giovanni and Santa Maria Maggiore’s one in where each year, in August, 5th take place the charming evocation of the "miracle of the snow" with a cascade of white petals from the ceiling in commemoration of “Our Lady of the Snow”; the ancient church of Santa Prassede, with its beautiful mosaics and much more ...
